Sometimes, someone asks me to speak out loud about something. I have led author and audience Q&As at the L.A. Times Festival of Books as well as interviewing with filmmakers onstage as part of the Times screening series. I have also been a regular guest on the L.A. Times’ Podcast ‘The Reel’ (see below).

[Fun, Easter egg-like fact: I performed stand-up comedy in San Francisco as a foolish youth. This “skill” has come in handy for all these gigs because, no joke, nothing was scarier than an audience of bored fellow comics.]

On the semi-terrestrial airwaves, I’ve spoken about the losses of Lemmy Kilminster and Prince on outlets such as the BBC, KFI and ABC Radio in recent years and been interviewed as part of an L.A.-centric documentary series on public television.

Below is a sampling of a few longer segments where I appeared:

KCET’s SoCal Connected: Jazz City (Jan. 2019)

The Reel: ‘This Is America’ and Kanye West (2018)

The Reel: The White House Correspondents’ Dinner (2018)

KCET’s “SoCal Connected” — Herbie Hancock: All That’s Jazz (2011)

BBC Jazz on 3: On the Los Angeles jazz scene (2010)
